Digitalisation
The digitalisation of transport offers cities the opportunity to enhance mobility, improve sustainability, and reduce emissions, but it also presents challenges. By embracing digital technologies such as real-time traffic monitoring, predictive analytics, and intelligent transport systems (ITS), cities can optimize transport operations and provide better, more responsive services to residents.
The EU has recognised the importance of digital transport infrastructure, with legislative frameworks such as the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Directive, which guides coordinated deployment across Europe. Additionally, initiatives like Real-Time Travel Information (RTTI) and Multimodal Travel Information Systems (MMTIS) aim to enhance the accessibility of travel information.
However, the shift to digital transport systems requires careful planning to ensure cybersecurity, data privacy, and equitable access for all communities, especially vulnerable populations. Authorities must collaborate with private sector stakeholders to ensure that digital transport solutions are integrated, interoperable, and inclusive.
