Cycling

As an active mode, similar to walking and wheeling, cycling has numerous benefits for individuals and communities. It can improve one's health, reduce local air pollution, decrease the transport sector's contribution to climate change, and advance a safer urban environment. Cycling can support healthier communities from physical, mental, economic, and social perspectives.

With the increased variety of bikes becoming available, such as e-bikes, cargo bikes, and adapted bikes, cycling can also be a powerful tool in supporting accessibility and inclusivity in our cities. However, as is the case for walking and wheeling, unlocking these benefits demands changes and investments in infrastructure, organisational and professional capacity, education, and awareness raising.

Local and regional authorities play a key role in these processes. POLIS continuously supports cities in regions in achieving and delivering these needed changes. The Working Group on Active Travel & Health dynamically examines the European scenario and what is in place to support the uptake of cycling—moreover, it provides a space for cities and regions to share their experiences and concerns.

Projects

Projects such as ELABORATOR, PHOEBE, and HL4EU all include cycling as part of their work. From improved urban environments and increased safety to supporting healthier lifestyles, these projects take different approaches to a common goal of advancing cycling in Europe.
