Vienna publishes position paper on automated mobility
The City of Vienna’s Urban Development and Planning Department (MA 18) has published a comprehensive position paper on the future of automated mobility.
This document, released in July 2024, outlines the city's strategic vision for the integration of fully automated vehicles and the role they will play in Vienna’s long-term urban development.
According to the position paper, Vienna is preparing for a future where automated vehicles (AVs) become increasingly common. The paper explores several key questions that guide the city’s approach: What impacts will different stages of automated mobility have on urban life? How can automated driving contribute to maintaining Vienna’s reputation as one of the most livable cities in the world? And what regulatory frameworks are essential to maximize the benefits of automated mobility?
A taste of automation
The City emphasises that its evaluation of automated mobility focuses on societal gains rather than purely technological or industrial motives. Key criteria include contributions to climate goals, traffic safety, environmental impact, enhanced public spaces, and expanded mobility options for people who cannot currently travel independently.
Moreover, the City envisions a future where automated vehicles, powered by decarbonised energy and utilised as shared, high-occupancy Mobility as a Service (MaaS), complement—not compete with—the city’s high-performance public transport system. This strategic approach emphasises the integration of AVs as a supportive element to Vienna’s existing transit network, prioritising environmental benefits without increasing mileage per vehicle.
