Strovolos
The Municipality of Strovolos was established in 1986 and is the second largest Municipality in Cyprus after Limassol, with a population of over 70.000 inhabitants.
Today, Strovolos is a big city that covers an area of 25km², divided into six parishes: Chryseleousa, Ayios Demetrios, Apostolos Varnavas and Ayios Makarios, Ayios Vasilios, National Martyr Kyprianos and Stavros.
The area has developed as a leading manufacturing district, propelling growth further.
The municipality has taken an increasingly active role in sustainable urban mobility planning. Through the Sustainable Mobility District, they recognise that the transport sector offers a great opportunity to reduce CO2 emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Aligned with the municipality’s participation in the Covenant of Mayor and its commitment to implement a local strategy for Energy and Climate, this initiative aims to co-design with the inhabitants the district’s streets with a focus on sustainable mobility and the quality of life of the inhabitants.
The Nicosia Integrated Mobility Master Plan also looks to expand public transport and active travel options, while retaining the historic character of the city.
To help propel this, Strovolos has been engaged with a range of projects including Life Urbanproof and Walk the Global Walk- which uses Global Citizenship Education (GCE), to mobilise young people as catalysts for transformational change, localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and producing an innovative educational model addressing complexities of the current global agenda.
