Bilbao
Bilbao is the capital of the Bizkaia province and the largest city in the Basque Country and northern Spain as a whole. Located right in the heart of Greater Bilbao, a metropolitan area home to many companies, iron mines, factories and shipyards, it is the tenth largest city in Spain, with a population of approximately 348,000 people.
The city of Bilbao has long been a leader in sustainable mobility. It has topped the ranking of main Spanish cities by placing pedestrian mobility at the centre of urban life, committing to sustainable modes of mobility and implementing far-reaching measures that are reducing car use and improving the quality of life of their residents.
Bilbao has also been a vanguard for inclusion and diversity, being a finalist city for the European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Awards. It has a distinct focus on becoming a city of values, placing inclusivity, diversity, equality, and social justice at the forefront of its policies, including mobility.
It has also been extremely successful in its urban transformation process: in a bid to ensure a high quality of life for its residents, Bilbao is addressing the major challenges linked to urban mobility and transportation through the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan 2016-2030. The plan is the result of ambitious work from the city and the city’s Council to achieve a sustainable, egalitarian, and people-friendly urban mobility.
Among its other great accomplishments was the city's victory of the 2021 EU Road Safety Award, given by the European Commission for local authorities with outstanding and innovative achievements in the area of road safety. Bilbao was the first major European city to implement a 30km/h speed limit throughout the urban landscape.
