Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands. Located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country, it has an urban population of 1,209,419 and a metropolitan population of 2,158,592. The city is in the province of North Holland in the west of the country.
The main objective of the city's traffic and transport policy is to improve accessibility and the quality of life in Amsterdam. The city wishes to restrict all unnecessary car-based traffic and promotes the bicycle for all short distances (under 10 km). Amsterdam is known as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world.
To support active travel further, Amsterdam is rolling out green mobility hubs – or ‘e-HUBs’ – to integrate several shared mobility services in the local transport ecosystem.
The city of Amsterdam has also led a group of Dutch cities in the development of a city data standard for mobility, leading the way in the establishment of a common data sharing approach to facilitate the cooperation between local authorities and private mobility operators.
Accessibility is also at the heart of their activities, and they have established a way of mapping the accessibility- and inaccessibility- of the city’s public transport services.
These key innovations are in line with the city’s leadership role in the fight against air pollution, the roll-out of electromobility services, and in the transition towards climate-neutrality.
Amsterdam cooperates with 15 other municipalities within the greater Amsterdam region (Stadsregio Amsterdam), which is a partnership of 16 municipalities in the Amsterdam region. Stadsregio Amsterdam has produced a Regional Traffic and Transport Plan comprising policies relating to infrastructure, public transport, RegioNet, road safety, location policy, traffic junctions and bicycle traffic. It sets out priorities in policy and subsidising.
