POLIS x CIVITAS Forum—Updating the SUMP guidelines: Adapting to new developments and best practices in urban mobility planning

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) Guidelines are undergoing an important update to keep pace with emerging trends, challenges, and technologies in urban mobility. A CIVITAS FORUM side event will be held on 30 September 2024, offering an opportunity for policymakers, researchers, and city representatives to contribute to the refinement of the guidelines.

Hosted by Rupprecht Consult as part of the EU Urban Mobility Observatory project, the workshop Updating the SUMP Guidelines: Adapting to New Developments and Best Practices in Urban Mobility Planning will gather experts to share insights, experiences, and recommendations on how to ensure the SUMP Guidelines remain a practical and future-proof resource for cities across Europe. Supported by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, the event will play a crucial role in shaping urban mobility planning for years to come.

The updated guidelines will address key developments in mobility since their last release in 2019. The workshop will focus on incorporating new trends, challenges, and technological advancements, as well as showcasing recent examples of best practices from cities.

Participants will:

  • Share Experiences: Discuss their practical experiences with the current SUMP Guidelines, identifying strengths and areas needing revision.
  • Explore Emerging Trends: Examine the impact of recent developments in mobility on urban planning and assess how well the guidelines address these changes.
  • Propose Innovations: Suggest updates to the guidelines, including tools and support mechanisms, and share relevant case studies that highlight innovative solutions.

This event offers a valuable opportunity for peer-to-peer exchange among urban mobility professionals, allowing participants to engage in focused discussions and collaborative brainstorming. It aims to ensure that the updated SUMP Guidelines will remain a highly practical tool for cities navigating the future of mobility.
