A New Research Platform for European Cities. The Pioneer Alliance on SDG11
Università Iuav di Venezia, in collaboration with the Veneto Region, is organizing an in-person event to present the PIONEER Alliance’s Research Platform to the Italian community in Brussels on 10 December from 10:00 to 19:00.
The event is organised by Università Iuav di Venezia under the umbrella of the PIONEER Alliance project, funded by the Erasmus+ program, which involves nine other European universities. The project aims to create a Knowledge Hub to enhance universities's efforts in the three pillars of education, research, and societal engagement while tackling the challenges of sustainable urban development in alignment with SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Morning session
This first part of the event will take place at the European Parliament, in Room SPINELLI 5E2, from 10:00-12:30.
In this session, the focus will be on the goals and activities of the PIONEER Alliance Project, on the key role of the Research Hub led by Università Iuav di Venezia in advancing the European Union's strategic research and innovation objective, and on the expected outcomes and potential impacts of the Knowledge Hub the project seeks to establish.
This first part of the event will feature interventions by:

- Benno Albrecht, Rector, Università Iuav di Venezia
- Francesco Musco, Director of Research, Università Iuav di Venezia
- A representative of the Veneto Region
- Cristina Catalanotti, Carlo Federico Dall’Omo, Vittore Negretto, and Linda Zardo, Università Iuav di Venezia
Afternoon session
The afternoon session will be hosted at the Veneto Region headquarters, Av. De Tervueren 67, from 14:30-19:00.
This session will consist of three thematic round tables addressing priority research directions and exploring connections:
- Climate Change and Cities
- Innovation and Infrastructure for the Enhancement of Socio-Cultural and Environmental Heritage, featuring the participation of Ivo Cré, POLIS Director for Policy & Projects
- Inclusive and Accessible Cities
Each round table will also address four transversal axes: Research and Innovation; Governance and Policies; Territorial Synergies and Partnerships; and Tools and Financing.
The discussions will be followed by an informal networking cocktail.
