Australia launches automated pedestrian crossings to reduce virus spread

Cities across Australia are rolling out automated pedestrian crossings to reduce the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus.

Sydney last week announced that all pedestrian crossings and traffic lights in the Central Business District (CBD) would be automated to avoid people having to touch surfaces to cross roads. Transport for New South Wales has now followed this up by announcing that this would be extended to the wider Sydney area.

The Queensland authority has also announced ambitions to follow Sydney's lead by implementing automated crossings in built-up areas and encouraging people to use their elbows instead of their hands on other crossings.
