Public health groups also call for EU target to reduce serious road injuries

The European Union should urgently come forward with a new target and measures to cut serious road injuries, according to public health and medical experts from across Europe. The letter has been sent to President Juncker and the relevant European Commissioners.

In 2015, about 40 organisations together with 11 members of the European Parliament have sent a letter to President Jean-Claude Juncker urging him to not drop setting new EU target to cut serious road injuries. POLIS has been among the signatories.

The European Commission published the first official European statistics on the number of people seriously injured in road collisions in the European Union earlier this year. Proposals from the European Commission for a serious injury target and for new vehicle safety standards have been dogged by continuous delays and are now long overdue. A serious injury target was first promised in 2010, and vehicle safety requirements have not been updated since 2009.
