Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is the public body responsible for coordinating transport services in Greater Manchester and shaping how people get around the city region. TfGM also owns Metrolink, the UK’s largest light-rail network. TfGM is currently taking on responsibility for buses in the city region through bus franchising, in a phased approach that will be complete by 2025.
TfGM is responsible for delivering the Bee Network, Greater Manchester’s fully integrated transport system, joining together buses, trams, walking, wheeling and cycling, with rail incorporated by 2030.
More than 5.6 million journeys are made across Greater Manchester’s transport network each day and it is TfGM’s job to keep the city region moving and growing. TfGM works to help people and places thrive and continues to plan for a more sustainable future.
Their capital pipeline is the rolling set of projects and programmes they deliver to improve transport across Greater Manchester. They are currently delivering a pipeline valued at £1.75bn. These schemes are crucial to successfully rolling out the Bee Network, providing a high-quality user experience across all travel in GM, promoting a pathway to net zero and achieving their wider ambitions for the city region.
Transport is central to Greater Manchester’s ambitious plans for the future, including those set out in the Greater Manchester Strategy (GMS) with its vision for a ‘greener, fairer and more prosperous’ city region. Transport for Greater Manchester works to deliver a Local Transport Plan (LTP), a statutory document which sets out their long-term ambitions for transport. Their LTP, known as the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040, guides planning, funding and decision-making for transport investment across the conurbation.
