Lille Metropole
Lille Metropole encompasses 95 municipalities and 1.1 million inhabitants in a territory that is both rural and urban, made up of cities like Lille (230,000 inhabitants), Roubaix and Tourcoing (100,000 each) and smaller towns and villages. It is the organizing authority of mobility and is in charge of road management and public transports.
Lille Metropole is also responsible for the coordination of Ilévia, the private sector company that operates the public transport network throughout the metropolis. The network is composed of buses (the entire uses biogas), trams (two lines) and a driverless subway system (two lines), which was the first automatic subway network in the world in 1983.
To decarbonize public transport and ensure accessibility for all, Lille Metropole will be investing more than 2 billion euros in the next 15 years to develop public transport infrastructures and a low-emission zone should be established by 2022. Lille Metropole is also currently developing its new sustainable urban mobility plan (SUMP), which should be finalized by 2022.
Lille was or is involved in EU projects: BAPTS, BIOGASMAX, TRACE (Take-Up Group) and European Cycling Challenge.
