Transport and Tourism
Tourism depends heavily on transport, both as a means of bringing travellers to destinations and as an integral part of the tourist experience itself. Transport not only enables tourism but is also driven by it; improved transportation facilities encourage tourism growth, which, in turn, drives the development of new transport infrastructure. Accessibility is therefore essential, allowing travellers to reach sought-after destinations using various modes of transport, often in combination.
Exploring the world as a tourist is a unique, life-enriching opportunity. However, in our pursuit of unforgettable experiences, we often overlook the environmental impact of our travel. Transport contributes significantly to air, soil, and water pollution, a critical issue for sustainable tourism.
Though exact numbers are difficult to pinpoint, it is estimated that 10% of tourism-related businesses in the EU are bus and coach operators, most of which are SMEs. Coach tourists, who typically spend 40% more per day than average tourists on items like food, souvenirs, and entertainment, also show a preference for staying in hotels, with 68% opting for this form of accommodation—more than those travelling by other means, including air.
However, this rise in coach travel also presents challenges for cities, particularly in providing adequate coach parking in central urban areas.
