Schaerbeek

Schaerbeek is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels Capital Region. It is a pioneer in the implementation of the "Good Move" Regional Mobility Plan, which was awarded the European Union's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) 2020 for safe, efficient and inclusive mobility.

All the actions implemented in the field of mobility meet the objectives of the "Good Move" plan: an improvement in the quality of life of the inhabitants, a better balance between modes of transport, pleasant and convivial neighbourhoods, increased road safety and more efficient public transport.

With the aim of finding a solution that suits everyone, Schaarbeek takes into account the needs of all road users: pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and motorists. To achieve this, the municipality encourages citizen participation: residents, merchants, schools, nurseries and associations are invited to give their opinion and share their experiences.

Schaarbeek is the first municipality in Brussels to have generalised the "zone 30" (speed limit) to its territory. This has led to a reduction in the number and severity of accidents, a reduction in the nuisance caused by air pollution and engine noise, and a reduction in traffic congestion.

Each redevelopment of public space is an opportunity for Schaarbeek to make it accessible to everyone: wider pavements accessible to people with reduced mobility, the creation of cycle paths and cycle streets, the installation of secure bicycle parking facilities, new public transport lanes, better adapted public lighting and street furniture.

Schaarbeek is thus improving the quality of life of its citizens and providing them with mobility solutions adapted to their destinations and needs.
