UWE Bristol and Sustrans tackle fair bus fares for youngsters
Have you checked the "Fair Bus Fares for Young people" policy briefing yet? Created jointly by UWE Bristol and Sustrans, it brings together new research to advocate for better transport for young people, identifying changes needed to make buses fairer for those aged 16-24.
The "Fair Bus Fares for Young People" policy briefing was produced as part of the Transport to Thrive, a project funded by the Health Foundation seeking to build the case for transport policy that better meets the needs of young people aged 16-24. The project's "young advisors" (aged 16-25) identified bus fares as a priority.
The policy briefing is divided in three parts:
- Current situation & future aspirations: conveys why bus and bus fare support are essential to young people. It maps the existing offers across the UK and future ambitions outlined in the Bus Service Improvement Plans of 79 local transport authorities in England.
- Case studies: examines the policy justification, uptake, and impacts of bus fare schemes for young people across the UK.
- Time to act: summarises the policy priorities that bus fare support for young people can help address.
Moreover, the policy briefing is a call for action. It asks national governments to set a minimum offer for young people aged up to 25 and to transport authorities or operators developing their offer to collect and share evaluation data to show how these schemes meet policy objectives, among others.
