Utrecht
Utrecht is the capital of the province of the same name. Together with the surrounding cities, the metropolitan area has about 600,000 inhabitants. Situated in the heart of the Netherlands, Utrecht is a node where major roads and railways intersect. This central position in the country makes Utrecht an interesting place for various kinds of businesses, meaning that on weekdays, some 90,000 commuters travel to Utrecht.
The Dutch city is particularly well known for its cycling, for which it obtained the title of most bike-friendly city in 2022. However, Utrecht has also been extremely successful in promoting the use of sustainable means of transport over recent years: their urban mobility strategy, outlined in the Mobility Plan 2040, represents a significant stride in aligning mobility with spatial planning. This involves densification, especially around transportation hubs, mixed-use land planning, and improved integration into the physical environment. The city has prioritised walking and cycling, fostering safe and appealing public spaces for these modes, and establishing an extensive network of designated routes to limit motorised traffic. Utrecht has made bold decisions to allocate space and infrastructure for sustainable modes, including public transport, and is continuing to do so.
